A monstrosity that does not only feed on humans but on their minds as well absorbing their memories their knowledge their feelings Humanity on the verge of extinction reduced to scattered groups living in Enclaves and fighting with everything they have including some crazy weapons that spray gel which upon contact with the creature crystallizes and vaporizes its flesh But considering the enormous ever growing size of the evil mass it seems like a drop in the bucketThe concept of the Jagannath a mass of strange matter that absorbs the consciousness from everything it devours was uite fascinating While you would assume the creature has become uite intelligent and clever with all the knowledge gained over time at the same time it behaved like a snotty spoiled child including its naivety and a stubborn dumbness deeming itself a god who must be worshipped by all people While the author did a good job explaining the possibility this contradiction I was not fully convinced at all timesKimi is a tough soldier but when she is sent to rescue a little girl that is mysteriously immune to the creature's absorption can even hurt it upon contact her maternal instinct kicks in an she is determined to do whatever it takes to save Lily the only hope left for humanity Only towards the end I was irritated by Kimi constantly feeling 'pride swelling' for Lily's courage and her 'heart overflowing' with love which was stated just one too many timesWhat follows is an action packed hunt peppered with numerous encounters with the monster but also with some bad people who kidnap Lily in order to reveal her powers and abuse them for their own survivalWell drawn characters lots of action including tons of splattering sludge and an original plot written in a uniue style make this a very recommendable novel not only but especially for fantasyhorrorsci fi aficionadosI received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review Review JAGGANATHAn immediately engrossing literally rip roaring literally rips roars deaths and devouring on nearly every page apocalyptic and dystopian thriller so little of humanity is left that civilization is only small enclaves of citizen soldiers JAGGANATH demands to be a one session read because who could sleep before completing its tale? I loved the excellent writing and construction the implacability of the destroyer its Cthulhu ian nature the valiant yet fatally flawed human defendersand little Lily the one human the omnipotent destroyer can't absorb nor destroy JAGGANATH was a joy to read and a candidate for rereading I reviewed an ARC generously provided by the author for review purposes; no fees were exchanged After trying to slog through Fantastes and only succeeding to get to 30% because of the heaviness of the old language switching to Jagannath was a fantastic relief Especially when I realised that the writing style was light and playful with loads of action that was to the point and active I liked the characters Kimi and Lily and I especially liked the importance of the canine friends too The male cast was lacking in substance as far as I was concerned There were plenty of them but they played far smaller roles in the story and this became a problem when it came to characters to kill offThe plot was engaging and while the characters dragged themselves from crisis to crisis I found myself cheering them on The down side to all this turmoil was that there wasn't really enough down time to get to know the characters all that well When partners and loved ones died I wasn't really sad because of this It lacked the emotional connection with the reader If fast paced sci fi is your thing then certainly try this one on for size The tone and light conversation made it easy to read The age of Lily one of the main characters really dictated the tone and voice of the piece with some sex scenes lightly brushed over not graphic or detailed Some readers have marked this as horror but in the grand scheme of things I found it neither horrifying nor thrilling Perhaps this is due to the adult horror books I've read I wouldn't consider this horror though there was some slightly graphic descriptions of death scenes I didn't find it overly graphic nor too far past what is depicted in computer games these days I believe this means it'd be suitable for most teen readersI didn't find any typos or errors which is a big plus but ultimately I felt the lack of emotional connection with the characters let this book down It was enjoyable and engaging but didn't allow enough reader connection Note I was provided with an electronic copy of this book in return for an honest review I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a reviewThis review may contain spoilersI liked the blurb of this book and the cover was suitably creepy one that I felt fit in really well with the plot of the storyI found the world really easy to follow and although apocalyptic scenarios are uite a common theme I thought this was a fairly uniue idea The Reaper was a really awful creature Or being Whatever it was Its ability to absorb its prey was something that was really creepy during the course of the book It was pretty awful when it used the forms of those it absorbed to talk to the people who knew its victimsI really liked Lily as a character though her personality seemed at odds with the way she acted at her first appearance I also liked the fact that she bonded so uickly with a cat at the library she'd taken shelter in I could definitely identify with her need to escape into an imaginary world due to how awful her reality had become There were times I felt a lot of sympathy for her in the bookI did really like Kimi as a character as well While there was a bit too much telling rather than showing and a lot of information dumps her attraction to Derek really didn't seem to come across as very realistic I did like her as a character And her friendship that formed with Lily was particularly sweetI thought it was interesting that the soldiers trained dogs to sniff out the infected though I would have liked a bit detail about how they knew dogs were able to do that I did feel like the dogs especially Kerchak and Spook were really good characters in their own right I loved the fast bond Spook formed with LilyI really hated Cooper and Kyle in this book They were characters who didn't really seem to have any redeeming ualities to them I did really like Jason and Innie though I thought it was sweet to see them together and they both proved themselves to be resourceful and intelligentI did very much enjoy reading this book I would read books by this author in the future First paragraph A tentacle as thick as a railroad tie burst out of the gap in the crumbling wall The sinuous limb shot toward the Renegade soldier like a giant compressed spring releasing Before the soldier could aim his flamethrower at it the tentacle coiled around him and sueezedYowza as Vilma from Scooby Doo would say This is one action ride of a good read easily consumed in one day I couldn't put it down today carting my ereader with me and snatching readings here and there as I ran errands on my day off I nearly ran into a wall in my house because I couldn't stop reading as I walked from one room to anotherJagannath begins uickly and doesn't let up until the very end The author does a great job in creating an apocalyptic world 15 years after a terrifying creature rises up from the seas and devastates humanity by absorbing their bodies and their minds Denney does this efficiently by weaving it in to the stories of the main characters without info dumping on the reader Gotta love it when the author respects the reader like that I enjoyed this book immensely much so than the author's earlier work Soulsnatcher The story had elements that reminded me of some of my favorite books and movies of scifi such as the alien creature from Carpenter's The Thing that can morph into any creature it kills the military training against all odds that is employed in Heinlein's Starship Troopers the machine sniffing dogs in the epic movie Terminator Yup I sueeeed throughout most of this book If you're a fan of science fiction horror adventure if you love a good dog story then you can't miss with Jagannath It's that good Jagannath by Kerry Alan Denney is truly a uniue ride It is the story of an evil blob like creature destroying humanity as it absorbs every thing in it's path nearly wiping out the entire civilization The it absorbs the intelligent and stronger it becomes It is now up to a select few military survivors to stop this nightmarish creature and save what is left of the world's population Although I enjoyed all the characters in this book I have to say my favorites were Lily and Spook Lily a 13 year old orphan who for some reason cannot be absorbed by the creature and the dog Spook they create such a bond you cannot help but love them both To be uite honest Denney's writing is so captivating it makes you fall in love with all the characters I laugh I cried and I cheered out loud at times when reading this book It is a tale of good vs evil but it also encompasses hope friendship loyalty and love If you are looking for a great sci fi read that will keep you on the edge of your seat then I recommend you pick up this book Cannot wait to read from this author Jagannath by Kerry Alan Denney is about an evil unstoppable monster that is destroying civilization and bringing on the apocalypse one city at a time The name describes a hindu god and means lord and master of the universe Jaggernath is also the origin for the word Juggernaut and this creature is unstoppable it absorbs humans and assimilates their intelligence growing stronger as it moves alongOnce it is done with the human race it will move on to the next planet and start all over again There is hope though a small band of soldiers is fighting back and one little girl named Lilly seems to be immune to the creature’s powers Things may look bleak for the human race but as long as there is a few survivors there is hopeMy favorite character in this book is Lilly She is a fascinating character this is a 13 year old trying to make it on her own in the apocalypse The Jagannath has wiped out over half of earth’s population including her family she has raised herself and has learned about life through reading books Lilly constantly compares herself to the heroes that she reads about and sees herself as a coward but its obvious that she is no cowardOne of my favorite parts of the book is when Lily is being held captive by a group of five abusive survivors Lily gets tired of how they abuse their dog her and each other She even goes as far as saying she would prefer being with the monster over their company As the situation escalates and Lily gets tired of the abuse she thinks to herself “Fraidy cats could only be pushed so far before they hissed and bared their claws” At this point I found myself wanting to yell out loud “Go get em Lily” I loved the idea that despite seeing herself as a fraidy cat she is the toughest character in the bookThe people in Jagannath go through hell and back but never give up Another part of this book I enjoyed was when a soldier and a scientist speak with the monster and find out what the creature thinks of itself and uses the knowledge against it This book got off to a slow start I found myself wondering how the creature could be everywhere at once and I also liked the character of Lilly so much that I didn’t like when the focus switched to other characters The other characters did grow on me though and all my answers about the monster did get answered I liked the fact that by the end I was feeling some sympathy for the creature as it gets revealed what it is and where it came from I’m hoping Kerry does a seuel to this story because I’m curious to see what comes nextBy the time I got to the middle of the book I was thinking this was an amazing read It mixes mythology philosophy horror science fiction and lots of action There is also a theme of redemption with one of the characters that I liked You could teach a class from the deeper meanings that come through in this book Jaggernath is a book that works on several different levels and is a must read for Horror and Science Fiction fans When the Reaper first appears from the ocean's depths no one is concerned at the amorphous oddity Once the viscous slime develops a taste for human flesh everything changes Cities are destroyed and humankind is taken to the brink of destruction Only a few remainI began reading Jagannath only a few days ago and was barely able to put it down When it comes to Thriller writing Kerry Alan Denny is excellent Not only is the story exhilarating starting with fantastic action at it's very beginning but his use of the of the English language is unparalleled I don't believe that passive phrases are in Mr Denny's vocabulary as every single sentence contains action So without further ado into the bookThere are of course many characters center this story the Reaper which Jagannath is somewhat in reference to Kimi the heroine of the story and Lilly the co heroine Although not in the mind of the Reaper early on we see about how this nasty pile of slime exists later on and what it lusts for and whyAgain the main character though is Kimi Losing her family to the Reaper when she was younger she joins the Enclave fighting to rid the planet of Reaper's existence Through losing friends and family to the disgusting morphing blob Kimi puts all of her hope in Lilly a small girl that for some unknown reason is immune to the Reaper's dissolving ways From fantastic descriptions of the new technology humans have invented to the superb dialog Kerry Alan Denny paints a very real post apocalyptic world in which the reader will feel fully immersed loosing touch with realityIn conclusion I would absolutely recommend Jagannath for anyone who loves a good Sci Fi Thriller It's a fun read one that you won't want to put downI reviewed an ARC generously provided by the author for review purposes; no fees were exchanged and this did not have an impact on my opinion of the work Go to ryanhartung dot com for additional in depth uestions answered from the author himself I won this book in a contest the other day and I couldn’t wait to read it It really intrigue me so I started it right away The year is 2037 and Corporal Kimi Jayden has one chance to rescue the lone refugee girl who is miraculously immune to Reaper absorption Thirteen year old Lily walks the deserted streets of Savannah alone ever since the Reaper absorbed her family and tried and failed to absorb her a year ago An amorphous creature that has nearly wiped out civilization growing as it feeds the Reaper assimilates its prey's intelligence when it consumes flesh and blood Growing smarter with each human it absorbs the Reaper transforms into monsters created from our darkest nightmares and it loves tormenting its victims The story is so uniue and the way Denney wrote about this creature it was like it was real An evil unstoppable monster that is destroying civilization and bringing on the apocalypse one city at a time The name describes a hindu god and means lord and master of the universe Jaggernath is also the origin for the word Juggernaut and this creature is unstoppable it absorbs humans and assimilates their intelligence growing stronger as it moves along I was drawn into the story line and could not put the book down for one second My favorite character in this book is Jason a 15 year old boy who will make you laugh as he does his best to protect the people he loves Lily was a powerful character who was only 13 years old The monster had killed her parents and also wants her There is non stop action all through this book If I had to sum this book up with just a few words it would be fantastic adventurous and outstanding I am so glad I had the honor of reading this book I am looking forward to reading from this author An amorphous creature mysteriously appeared on Earth and nearly wiped out civilization The Reaper as it has come to be known absorbs its victims intelligence along with their memories Growing larger and smarter with every feeding it has become impossible to stop Corporal Kimi Jayden is on a mission to find the girl who might be able to save them all Thirteen year old Lily has been alone since the monster absorbed her family a year ago No one knows why the creature can't absorb her but believe the answer might be in her DNA Nothing is important to Kimi than finding her She is willing to sacrifice her own life if necessary The Reaper also wants Lily so the battle begins Mr Denney paints such an incredibly visual picture with his words it makes the non stop action in JAGANNATH play like a Hollywood blockbuster movie in your head To which I say two thumbs up There is so much going on in this book Be prepared to put your life on hold while you read it If you don't get sucked it right away there is something wrong with you I mean how can you go wrong with a monster straight from your nightmares a bad ass female solider and a young girl who just desperately wants a friend I can't believe I almost forgot to mention Jason a 15 yr old boy who will make you laugh out loud as he does he best to protect the people he lovesI received an ARC from the author for an honest review
